Anderson-Schnabel-Kippenberger, or Anderschnabelberger, oil on printed canvas, 40x18, October 2009 for the "I Am Snowboarding" art show scheduled for November 14th in Mammoth, California.
It is no secret that I wanted Jeff Anderson to ride for the company-brand I worked for. Both he and his brother Billy are two of my all time favorite people that I care for- primarily because they made me feel like one of them, like there brother, like there family.
The pictures used are from Jeff Curtes who has been one of the greatest story tellers of the snowboard industry since the beginning, and his photographs of snowboarding are of a hardworking quality style that is timeless and magical looking.

I always love it when people give me ideas for a painting, especially for a possible snowboard graphic. I have never seen the movie Breakfast at Tiffanys, but have seen the images of Audrey Hepburn from it and barrowed some to create a painting. I worked on probably ten versions before I got one that looked the way I wanted. During this time the presidential election thing was going on, and I think the people who gave Sarah Palin a makeover gave her the Audrey Hepburn look. Be Famous! The Fashion Click is for Everyone.

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of the Rings book three, The Return of the King. I am a huge fan of the Hobbit, and grew up seeing the cartoon many times . I wanted to do this painting forever, and I finally did in 1998 for Peter Saari. It is acrylic on masonite 4ftx8ft. Snowboarder Magazine's Mark Sullivan did an art page on me with this painting in it, and it was part of a show about board art in the Bellevue art museum. The battle princess was also used for a snowboard graphic.

I did the art for Lib Tech rider Joey McGuire's 1st model, and the theme was Washington apples giving credit to where Joey was from Wenatche. I tried to make the logo look like a baseball jersey font, and had it go from the tip of the board so you could read it if a regular footer was doing a backside air. Joey is regular footed.

I think Chris Owen, who worked for Morrow, got me hooked up doing this board graphic for Todd Richards. I met Todd a few times, and was stoked on his riding. I got ideas talking to him on the phone, and he said he liked monsters, so I tried to do some sort of skate-style monster graphic. I was excited to see Todd riding the board graphic in the 98 Japan Olympics, the first time snowboarding was allowed. I went to a sports bar to watch the halfpipe, and when they showed Todd's run I was not surprised to see him riding a board with his own art. I really wanted to see him win the halfpipe, but he did not. I wish he would have tried again in 02.

I learned how to snowboard at Crystal Mountian,WA., and I worked-lived up there for a couple seasons. Crystal is mostly ridden by skiers, and I really tried to emmulate what they could do down the groomed slopes. I became infatuated with ski racers, and would call the young lady ones applebutts because they would bend over in the liftline, with there ski poles sticking there butts in the air. Everyone thought I did a drawing of Pecabo Street, but I used a picture of Hilary Lindh. The board in the picture tho is actually signed by Pecabo, who got a silver medal in Super G at the 94 Olympics. She won gold in the downhill at the 98 event.

Lib Tech used to produce these boards with one-offs, or art tops. Each one was different, and they took little time to do. Good-bye Jackson Pollack. I remember one being made that read "Free Gator Rogowski". This picture is of my acme board, and it has the best art top painting I ever did. It probably took me 1 minute to create. I try and create its effect in alot of my stuff, the colors are awesome, it reminds me of some sort-a candy-puke on the street.

I try and give credit sometimes to the images barrowed for my paintings. There was this picture in Transworld of Victoria Jealouse(a Burton rider) doing this awesome carve, and I really wanted to paint it for a base graphic. With permission from Mike and Pete(the owners of Mervin), I decided to make the painting look obvious who the snowboarder was , and where it came from. It is a diorama the size of an actual board 160cm long. The top art is an abstracted version of world flags totally influenced by my experience doing the one-off art tops. Both paintings are acrylic on posterboard. To clear anykind of controversy, I sent memos to whom it may concern, Burton, Jon Foster(the photographer), and Victoria . I never heard from any of them, but later on I traded one of the boards to Victoria for one of her Freedom models.

This was the re-make, I think about 5 years after the first Emma Peel graphic, and just like the the T.V.show The Avengers it went from B/W to color. It was fully sublimated and cheesally glammend out. I had a couple people help me with the prop pieces, and had my friend Jeff Anderson do the base graphic. I thought it came out great. I remember being at the Vegas trade show and overhearing a regional team rider tell someone that it was the worst graphic ever. The uglier the better.

This was the first, Emma Peel has mass appeal, well that is what I would tell people the meaning of the board was. Emma Peel(actress Dianna Rigg) was a secret agent character from a British TV series in the 60's called The Avengers. I remember seeing the show late at night when I was a little boy, and it scared me. Then, during the time I was snowboarding alot and beginning to work for a snowboard maker(Mervin Mfg.) I was living with my friend Paul Ferrel's parents, and everyday before I went to work I would watch re-runs of The Avengers on the A&E channel, and thought it was the raddest shit, I especially thought the character Emma Peel was the coolest, most bad ass woman. I became infatuated with Emma Peel. During this time I was becoming frustrated riding snowboards because the ones I was riding where not holding there edge and washing out(my goal was to emulate skiers+freestylers). I did not even want to ride anymore. I think alot of people wanted the same thing, even Mike & Pete(the owners of Mervin), and I really do not how it came about, but I think because I continued to hound , and beg for it , and insisted on a board called the Emma Peel, Mike and Pete decided to design something that would go in the line up of production boards. I had already done some art for Mervin's trade show booth that was totally low budge garage stlye, and I just remember Jamie and Circe(Lib Tech riders) saying to everyone that I should do the graphic. At this time I was totally stoked on Mike Ranquet's Lamar graphic(with the pool table and stick with balls), and wanted to do something like it. Unfortuanately, Mervin was not making boards you could sublimate on, so the graphic I designed was silk screened, and produced in a two-dimensional color(which I thought looked great). It was an insane board to ride, with its deep side-cut, and proportionally sized effective edge , you could kill it. Eventually many of the riders who wanted it, disliked it , because of its deep sidecut and how it would hook and grab you into a carve. I personally thought the board was satisfiying, but I think for most, it was not that appealling.It was the beginning of the spin-o-jib era, and the Emma Peel board was hard to ride for most people.It took you for a ride. Mervin kept on making the board and I kept on coming up with the artwork, it was a challenge to try and come up with something different every year. I had become inspired to do art again, and not take the skills for granted. I think I got a little lucky getting hooked at Mervin, they let me do whatever art I wanted eventho my stuff was often times pretty risky. I have gained alot of knowledge from my experience being able to do art for Mervin, and it has been awesome.
